Part 1 - In the beginning there was krautrock ...
Reinhard 'Atzen' Wehmeyer (guitar, vocals), Lutz Oldemeier (drums), Wolfgang Nickel (keyboards) and Petja Hofman (bass, vocals) first began to collaborate in 1968. They started under the name 'Psychotic Reaction', later renamed to 'Reaction' but finally they used MISSUS BEASTLY - named after a puppet appearing on a television series at that time.

Despite of their origin in Westphalia the most gigs were done in the south of Germany. They were conciliated by Günther Scheding, a good friend, who had moved to the Mainz region because of his studies. During a Burg Waldeck Festival in 1969 they came in contact with TANGERINE DREAM, GURU GURU and XHOL. They also participated at the 2. Essener Pop & Blues-Festival in April 1970 together with RENAISSANCE, BLACK SABBATH and KEEF HARTLEY BAND.

MISSUS BEASTLY soon required a reputation as a psychedelic jam band whose gigs worked like happenings though, differing to what normally would be considered as a concert. Petja Hofman: "We simply started to play what came into our minds - and after two or three hours we stopped. During this events the mood was intensively stirring. All common rules were broken and orchestrated. That exactly caused the band's special reputation and success".

Of course the band also had a lot of fans in the native Herford region. Booked as the opening act for more popular bands it could happen that uproar occured because the audience preferred to experience more MISSUS BEASTLY music - for example at Stadtgarten/Bünde in 1969 where they had to support THE LORDS and later at the Jaguar-Club with THE MOVE as the top act. The band once had trouble when trying to get to Paris. They were hold up at the border, scissored and sent back.

At the beginning of the year 1970 they started with recordings for their first nameless album at Gunter Tannhäuser's CPM-Studio. The song material was worked out by accident in the same way as the gigs happened. It didn't match with what the band played live. Some of the songs, for example 'Uncle Sam' und 'Decision' never were presented on a stage - composed by Petja Hofman when the soundman was justifying the microphones. Hansi Fischer, the flute player of XHOL CARAVAN, appears on the song 'Shame on you' and the sessions were additionally supported by the AMON DÜÜL II members Dieter Serfas, Chris Karrer und John Weinzierl.

A psychedelic painting was used for the red album cover. 1000 copies were manufactured and up to now the vinyl version has rised in value up to 1000 Euro. MISSUS BEASTLY offers a blend of different music styles based on the blues - sometimes psychedelic coloured, sometimes jazz influenced and decorated with some weird insertions. So this album can be considered as an early krautrock effort wheras the band later evolved to a distinctive jazz rock/fusion style.

The band was enlarged shortly after the album release to six members with keyboard player Michael Scholz and guitarist Paul Vincent (Motherhood). They had an eastern gig 1970 roundabout five o'clock in the morning at the 1. Hamburger Pop & Blues Festival' and were rewarded with 60 DM. The band also had jam sessions with Keyboarder Jimmy Jackson (Passport, Embryo). Vincent about this times: "Missus Beastly was a totally weird staff which improvised psychedelic rock for hours, if the medicine chest consisted of enough stuff. Not only in Westphalia we were a sensation! We satisfied our fans every evening in another way and we never knew what will happen." Probably this was too straining permanently and Vincent left the band in summer 1970 substituted by Roman Bunka (later EMBRYO). Jürgen Benz (sax, flute) followed soon as the seventh member.

At the end of the year also Atzen Wehmeyer and Wolfgang Nickel left the band - probably because they don't wanted to follow the preferred direction anymore. Klaus Götzner (later TON, STEINE, SCHERBEN) came in as the second drummer. Live performances were rare in the meanwhile and finally MISSUS BEASTLY disbanded at the end of 1971 whereas the musicians joined other bands furthermore.

The year 2000 saw a legalized re-release of the debut vinyl (Tripkick 005) with the red cover. Because the original tapes didn't exist anymore a well-preserved vinyl was used as the master.
